Understanding Course Size: How Big Can Your Course Be?

SwiftPaws courses are completely scalable, so you can design a course that fits your space! However, the maximum course size we advertise is a guideline, not a guaranteed distance. Your actual maximum depends on several factors, including your setup, terrain, and the lures you use.

What Do Our Advertised Maximums Mean?

Our advertised maximum course sizes assume ideal conditions and the minimum setup needed to run a course: the main drive unit and a single field pulley. This configuration places the least load on the motor, allowing for the longest possible course.

For the Home Original, the advertised maximum of up to 300 feet (sometimes listed as 200–300 feet) is based on these conditions.
In practice, your maximum course size will depend on several factors, including:

  • Number of field pulleys: Additional pulleys increase the load on the motor and may require a shorter course.
  • Terrain: Uneven ground or an incline can affect performance.
  • Grass and ground conditions: Long or thick grass can create additional resistance.
  • Lures: The type and number of lures you use affect the load on the system.
  • Lure attachment: Even the knot you use to attach your lure to the line can affect performance.

These factors work together to determine the maximum course size you can achieve with your particular setup.

Which Kit Is Right for Your Course?

If you have a specific course size in mind, choosing the right kit is important.
Home Original:

  • Home Plus: Advertised for courses up to approximately 750 feet under the same ideal conditions with the minimum setup. We have more information in this article: How to set up straight-line course

Planning a 300-foot course? We recommend the Home Plus if you know you want to run a course of that length, giving you more capacity to accommodate your setup and conditions.
Want to run a full 100-yard straight-line course, like a FastCAT run? The Home Plus is the only one of these two kits capable of handling this setup.

The Bottom Line

There is no single maximum course size that applies to every setup. The beauty of SwiftPaws is that you can customize your course to fit your space and your needs. Your achievable course length depends on the complete setup, not just the drive unit's advertised maximum.

When planning your course, consider your available space, terrain, number of pulleys, and lure setup. If you have a specific course length in mind, choosing your kit based on that goal is the best place to start.
