Always use the extension cable (pigtail) to connect the drive to power.
The extension cable ships already attached to the drive unit. Leave the extension plugged into the drive - and plug the wall adapter or power pack to the extension. Always Connect and Disconnect Power at the "quick disconnect" connectors to protect the drive power port from damage.
